The popularity of the Ice Bucket Challenge
has not only brought awareness about ALS, there’s
also been a surge of interest and donations in
support of other rare diseases.
At one center for rare diseases in china, staff say
that since the bucket challenges arrived in China on
Friday, donations have surged to over 8.5 million
yuan ($1.4 million).
However staff there say that even with the hefty lift
in donations, they are not nearly enough for a
country that has the highest number of rare disease
sufferers, including 200-thousand sufferers of ALS.
“Rare diseases are not covered by medical
insurance. The patients need long-standing family
care and are not able to hold normal jobs. There is
still a long way to go,” said Wang Yiou, founder of
the China Dolls Center for Rare Disorders.
Many are hoping that the movement will bring to
light other afflictions, such as DMD, or Duchenne
muscular dystrophy, which has similar symptoms to
ALS, but only affects young boys.
Sources spoke to a 16-year-old
who has been diagnosed with DMD for almost 10
years, forcing him to rely on a wheelchair since age
11. While many afflicted with the disease do not live
past the age of 20, the family continue to search
for medical treatment that will slow the illness.
